I use a candle to heat an ice pick to put holes in plastic. A nail would just need a bit more time over the flame. No stove necessary.

I have also used the heated nail method. I just held the nail with pliers when I heated it.

You're right. I don't have gas and so I used a candle, but you could use a blowtorch to heat the nail or use a soldering iron like others suggested. That's what I love about the internet, everyone can share their creative ideas!
