At the suggestion of a larger nursery I get many orchids from, I went to a local Japanese tool store and picked up two of these "Kujiri". One regular, one small.

They are *amazing* for working with roots. Often root hooks are too large, rakes don't make sense, and we need something else to separate the roots when re-potting on our 'fine rooted orchids'.

These fit the bill perfectly. Made of stainless so they can be fired to sterilize.

"These handy little tools are Japanese style awls, and often find themselves playing at being a scriber or centre marker simply because they do that job so well.

A tempered steel 'blade' with a simple oak (shiragashi) handle is the sum of it's parts, and until you use one, you might not realize how useful they really are.

(And until you use one and do realize how useful they really are, you will wish you had bought ten, because they do tend to 'grow legs' like shop pencils are known to.)"

Adding: Got an email from my local store. They told me they would add it to their website. They are a great company, very happy to have found them. Check for the tools there soon if you want them!
