I've done this with Tolumnias (see pic). I started with three but the top one didn't make it. Yes, I know that eventually the Tollies will overrun this mount. I started with a piece of wood that I got at a shop and added the base with an aluminum screws (no rust). I selected Tolumnias since they were a) inexpensive (maybe $10 a piece) ; 2) they were in bloom at the same time when I bought them; 3) they thrive on getting dry FAST; and 4) they are a cute as can be.
I mounted these last spring and as you can see there is good root attachment, but only one has spiked. I might replace the third one at the top, but I might not.
I saw a entire "tree" of Tolumnias at an orchid nursery once with about 50 plants. It is what inspired me.
