Will the minerals build up on the inside, outside, or both surfaces? How would that affect the plant?

Minerals build up upon evaporation, so it will be primarily on the outside. I suppose that as the water level on the inside drops, you might get a ring there too, like a toilet bowl.

I would imagine that it would really depend on water quality.

Like my terrarium? I have a stinky terrarium I just posted about. Man, why does the natural world stink sometimes?

They work fine!
Here is an example of on that I have had for a couple of years now..
They are quite common here - in Brazil - for the more moisture / cooler temp loving smaller orchids.

Hey thats a nice one! I like how it flares at the bottom.
Edit: Also the ridges on the surface seem like a great way to get roots to stick! I want!

Yes, they are fun - as long as you put the right flower on it! I almost drowned an encyclia profusa with too much sphagnum moss around the roots - it was always wet..
live and learn ... I replanted it mounted on a piece of cork and it is loving life!

I'd try putting well rinsed activated carbon into the log, bottle, or what have you. Activated carbon is used in aquarium culture to keep water from going stagnant and smelling bad. And it can easily be replaced every few months by dumpng it out, and replacing it with fresh activated carbon without disturbing the attached plant.
I'd also try putting the log/pot into the leg of panty hose like a bag before attaching the new plant so you can slip the plant off to clean and sterlize the same pot, or move to another pot. And the pantyhose would also keep out trash, and mosquitos from breeding in the pot water.

I've have a mini Catt on one of my 'logs' and it bloomed this summer and has lots of roots and growth. I mounted 3 Tolumnia's on my other one. One has a spike at the moment so that will look nice when it blooms. Was hoping they would all bloom at one, but likely a pipe dream!
