Huge dendrobium moschatum.....
Problem with my Dendrobium moschatum.
I have a HUGE dendrobium moschatum. It was previously potted in a heavy clay pot, essentially bare root, but since the canes are so tall, the wind toppled it over. I thought I would solve the problem by repotting it in a heavier clay pot with hydroton. Two days ago, the plant worked itself out of the pot.
I talked to my Judge about this in the morning, and she said, "well, it sounds like you're trying to make the plant go against its nature and not be pendent, it's in its nature to be so." She's right!
I don't want to have to keep repotting this, but I don't have a tree that I can mount it on. I certainly don't want to get rid of the plant. I thought about putting it in a heavy gauge wire basket, but the canes are so long they'd hit the floor. I then thought about buying a large piece of oak lumber and mounting it on that. I can lean the lumber against an outdoor wall.
I can't think of anything else. What are your thoughts?

I like the lumber Idea should be pretty in bloom. Do you have anywhere to hang it that way that you could hang it upside down? That would be REALLY pretty I bet when it blooms.

You could always get bamboo stakes and stake it. It's not the best looking solution but it's not horrible.

A huge square basket may work, since I don't know how big your plant is, you could easily make one (or have someone make one) that is big enough for your plant. Good luck!

I kept mine hung for best results, man was it ever pretty in bloom! I just love em!.....if you cant hang it, then get a big heavy clay pot, and put a big rock in the bottom, that will help for drainage too...mine didn't seem to need much media, just enough to stabilize it...the roots always filled whatever pot it was put in....to display it, just set the pot up on something like some other big clay pots, so the pendulous blossoms have some room to hang...it is worth the extra effort! good luck!
