zygo repot

Hi everyone. I haven't been around much as my health isn't very good and I only have 2 (GASP) orchids left. I did not get them repotted in a timely manner. My Zygo is in a 5" plastic pot and making new growth 3/4 inch from the rim, should I just leave it alone or go ahead and repot it?

I am disgusted with pot sizes, what happened to 6" pots? I also don't know what size pot to use. I could trim off a couple of old pseudobulbs and put it back into the 5" but I didn't know if that was a good idea at this time of the year. I kind of wanted it to get as large as it can.

I hope you are feeling better now or very soon.

When I repot I try to have just enough room for a couple years growth. Usually you can tell by how the old growths have been doing to see which direction and how big it will get. If a new growth just started then now would be the time to repot. repotme.com has a few selections of 6" pots. Ordering pots online seemed silly to me, but if you're looking for something specific, why not?

I love repotting though and sometimes do so at cost to the plants. I wish they loved it as much as I do.

Thanks, I thought it was supposed to be resting now instead of growing but am not sure. This is the habit it has had since I got it but I don't know if fall is when it grows or if it is because my conditions aren't very good for it.

I used to have a lot of orchids and repotted a lot too. My niece got me this zygo and 'helpfully' repotted it in an orchid mix and kept it at her house for a couple of weeks and by the time I got it she had rotted off nearly all the roots. After 2 years it has bloomed and recovered but I'm still al little afraid to insult it again.

When the new growth has pushed roots about an inch long you can repot it by placing it in the next bigger pot. Wash off the old media gently with a hose and then repot with new media. Try not to damage the old root mass.

Is the medium broken down? If not I'd just let it be. Most plants prefer to be pot bound.
