When to repott???
Default When to repott???

So I have a bunch of orchids that I repotted last year into fresh medium.... I need to repott my gesneriads for sure because they need bigger pots, so I wanted to go on a repotting spree . My question is how often do you guys repot into fresh sphagneum moss and orchid bark???? Is it a yearly thing or on another basis?

Sphag breaks down faster than bark. For it, you usually need to repot once a year. For bark - it will last longer, and 'when' usually depends on the type of plant. Some people always repot right after a blooming cycle.

Sphag moss should be repoted once a year. As for bark. It depends on what bark you use, how thick the bark is and how often you water. The smaller bark like the stuff used for paphs will most likely need to be changed out every year since it is usually used for moisture loving plants and also breaks down faster. It may look fine on the surface but when you repot you'll find the bark has turned to soil.

Moss once a year, bark/CHC every two years and leca only when I want to change the pot size.

However while I will repot ones that look like they might have problems if left longer at this time of year I will wait to have my repotting spree for the spring or summer. Repotting at this time of year is fine but for me the cold weather now means that they do better if repotted when starting to grow in the spring.

Here is another good example of knowing where you are. The difference in the answer will be based on where you live. Detroit is much different than Miami. California is different from Minnesota. Light levels and temps mean a lot.
