Time to repot?? Phal
I inherited this poor phal from someone that didn't water it too much. Don't know how old it is but it sure has a lot of healthy looking roots in spite of not being cared for. Here's a couple of picts - do you think I should repot? It is one of those ginormous phals -- thanks.

It is a bit snug, but could very well stay in that same pot until next season. Is it currently growing in soil? I would just definitely change the media to bark, and if you are going to get another see-thru pot, make it one with nice big drainage holes. I wouldn't go up more than .5" or at most .75" larger.

No, it is not in soil - it looks like fine bark throughout - the bark on top is a bit larger. It is snug for sure - maybe I'll see how it does under my care for a while and then repot. I just received it last week - I submerged and soaked it for about an hour - it was super dry. I then let it drain out and placed it in an east facing window. Gets nice morning sun for about an hour (I have 2 other phals in this locale and they seem to be thriving). It looks a bit better since the watering. Thanks for your input.

As long as the mix is not broken down I would leave it until spring when new roots (and old ones) start to grow again. It doesn't look under potted to me.

I really can't tell if the mix is broken down or not. As I said, the bark on top is moderate size but down the sides where it is "viewable" thru the plastic pot, it looks finer. I think I'll just keep my eye on it and go from there. I guess if it doesn't do well, I can assume the mix is broken down and I'll repot with a new batch. Thanks for your thoughts.

I've never really had a problem repotting Phals whenever. And my few (3) I have now all have actively growing roots, as well as some new ones starting.
I'm usually of the feeling that if you don't know how old the media is, it's good to repot - but those roots in the photos look very good, so it's likely fine to wait til spring.

My treatment for new acquisition. First step is Quarantine; cleaning, disinfecting, repoting and one month no contact with another plant. No exceptions.

I have kept it separate from my other plants and will do so for a while. It looks like the consensus about the repot is to wait until spring. Think I'll go with that. Thanks to all.

I agree with waiting till spring. Looks happy enough where it is and new growth in the spring will help it settle in.
