Repotting - Should I be Concerned About These Roots?
Default Repotting - Should I be Concerned About These Roots?

Hi all,
I've finally repotted my two phals. When I got a good look at the root system of the large phal, it seems that all of the roots toward the center are yellow an still very damp (I watered four days ago). There are also brown spots showing on some of the damper roots. Is this normal or maybe overwatering? I water once a week and sometimes mist the aerial roots in between waterings. They're in plastic pots with slits, and then set in larger decorative ceramic pots. I haven't been using any food or fertilizer. They are also both just finishing up their flowering (they each have about 2 or 3 flowers left to drop).

I've repotted in just slightly larger pots with holes/slits to allow for airflow. They're potted in a bark orchid medium and I added a very, very small amount of moss around the top because the top (previously aerial) roots were drying out quickly.
What now? Do I water immediately, or let them adjust for a few days first? Here are some pics of the roots. Thanks!! Note - be sure to see next post with 2nd picture.

These roots look fine. Roots that are under the media in the pot look somewhat different than their bretheren on top the media. As long as they aren't black or squishy they are fine. Unless you live where the relative humidity is below 30% to 40% you don't need to put moss on or in the media. The aerial roots absorb less moisture than the roots under the media for the simple fact that they stay more moist and then velamin is more open and absorbent. If the velamin on the aerial roots were this open the plant would lose too much water back out through it so it is less open. Hope this makes sense. Don't over pot these. Put them into the smallest pot you can get them into.

Thanks James. Good info. Now that they're repotted - should I water immediately, or let them settle for a few days?

They look fine to me as well.

Watering after repotting...some people wait and some people wait.

I water right away only if the new potting mix was rather dry and the roots were without damage just in case some disease sets in through any wounds.

I usually wait but I too determine if the media is too dry in which case I water.

Look fine to me as well. Personally I water with rain water only straight away. I water as normal and start using fertiliser after a couple of weeks.
