Has anybody used the artstone pots as a pot and humidity tray in one?

my idea was to put the orchid (in their transparant pot) into a oversized artstone pot.
then fill the bottom resevoir with water so it can function as a humiditytray.

it would look alot nicer then the normal ugly humuditytrays.

Has anybody have any experience with doing this?

I'd say it should work. Just be careful that the orchid isn't sitting in the water, but above it and it should work well. You can always pull the transparent pot out regularly to check on the roots and make sure they're OK.

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

I've had excellent results with clear plastic pots with slots in their sides, placed inside a larger decorative ceramic orchid pot with an attached tray. Water stays in the tray most of the time and creates a humid environment around the slotted plastic pot. The phals had better root growth than the phals in slotted clear plastic pots that were not inside a second pot. So I would think that the artstone pot should work well for you. Let us know how it goes.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is "artstone"?

In here you can get them on every street corner.
I guess they are not common in USA, maybe typical dutch?

they are pots with a drainage system inside.
the idea is that you can't overwater, that the water flows away in a resevoir at the bottom, so that the roots don't stay wet.

they are made of somekind grinded stone and somekind plastic.
so they are light and very strong and cost about the same as a regular pot.

here is a youtube video about it with a horrible dutch accent

Thank you for the info, magila. Ground stone + ground plastic = artstone. I am familiar with the self-watering pots, but have never heard of or seen a drainage pot. Sounds like it would work for orchids.
