I agree. My neighbour bought Miracle grow and it might be ok for cyms, but it really isn't good for much else. If you use a clear pot with sphag and mix it with charcoal and maybe a little perlite, it works really well, especially with styrofoam peanuts for drainage.
With phals, if you can see the roots and they are silver/grey, they need water. If they are green, they are fine.

That actually looks pretty good. The sphag doesn't look too old.

Invest in Orchiata if you have or plan to have a few plants. If you only have one or two, go get the chunky mix at HD/Lowes/garden center. There is nothing wrong with it. The preference for Orchiata is its longevity. If you have many plants, you start noticing the frequency of repotting.
