Hmmm - I can't seem to upload my pictures. Something about a security error? I think I'll be OK with plant and potting material as is - at least for now!
Thank you all so much for so many and such prompt responses! I thought I'd be lucky if I heard back from one person within a month! I am so very glad to be so very wrong.
I'll try posting my photos again soon, and in the meantime I'll try not to kill my plant!
Here are some totally not awesome pictures of my plant. I think I'm going to leave it as is until it's done with this growth season, and then once it goes dormant again try repotting in a looser / coarser medium.
I feel you should re-pot most orchids when there is a new growth with some new roots, not when it is dormant. The new roots adapt readily to the new media whereas sometimes the old ones don't. The new ones will help feed the entire plant after the re-pot. You'll have to really be careful with that soil to not over water. I wonder how the roots in the center are. I also feel that sometimes when roots are circling the pot like that its because they don't like what's in the pot and are trying to get more air. But that is just my thought.
