I was just wondering. Has anyone used this as the only medium? I know it would proably mean frequent watering.

My concern about this would be the decomp rate. Will dead Sp. Moss not rot pretty quick? I think it would do fine for moisture, but again, I think the medium would break down too quickly.
Good to hear others views on this.

Steve,
That is a good question. I don't know how long it takes to decompose?

You are talking about Tillandsia usneoides? I didn't know that anyone used it as a medium at all.

No not spaghum. The bags just say Spanish Moss. It is long fibered and a light color. Kind of silver and white sort of. Not as course as straw. Sometimes you could see it as a top dressing on certain plants probably for humidty. They sell it everywhere around here Nursery's Home Depot Dollar Tree etc.

They sell that everywhere in my area too.

Actually I can find almost every moss but sphagnum moss.

The Spanish moss, if it's the one I'm thinking of, is pretty water resistant and dries very quickly.

Im pretty sure that's the one my maxillaria came mounted in.

Spanish moss will decompose within weeks if used as a medium.

In my area two different kinds of mosses are called Spanish moss so I guess it really matters which one were talking about.
