Will powdered sulfur on the roots of Phals. hurt?
Hello! I am new to the Orchid Board and am very pleased to find you. I just bought 7 Phals. that were finished flowering and I am in the process of repotting. I removed all the old medium and cleaned up to roots. My question is, will I harm my plants by dipping them into a powdered 90% sulfur. I thought that it may help heal all the cuts I had to make. Does sulfur hurt Phals? Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for your replies. I am anxiously waiting for your answers.

Good question Giovannarosa:
I unfortunately have no answer for you as paphs are not my specialty.....but I did want to welcome you to the board. I am sure someone out there has your answer, but until they provide it, I wanted you to know that you have found a really great site for asking such.
Have a great experience here!
Steve

welcome to the board!
I think you can put some sulfur on the cut roots, I like to put cinnamon just a little, you dont want to put to much. only cut the roots if they are bad
good luck with your phals

Don't fill the pot with sulfur, but the amount that will stick to the cuts can't hurt anything, and is fairly effective as you want to use it.

Thanks!
I just want to thank all that responded to my question. I will just treat the cut ends and not immerse the whole root system, I guess it is not necessary to do what I first intended. Thanks so much for your help and welcome!

Sulfur is a great fungicide, but like cinnamon, will desiccate the roots if applied too liberally. Dip cut ends, or dab breaks, but don't cover more than that.

very interesting this thread. I have heard that sulfur is a good fungacide and miticide/insectice to some degree, but also have read that it is bad for orchids. I am still not sure.

It has never harmed any of my orchids. I dist any wounds or cuts or areas where the root is looking bad.
