My question is basically that... what medium for a vanilla orchid?
It is currently planted in something very foreign to me so it makes me nervous so what I should be re-potting it in?

I suspect any well draining orchid mix would work - bark or CHC mixed with perlite. Just stay away from a garden potting soil mix which would be too heavy and hold too much moisture.
I grow mine in a mix of sand, red lava rock, miracle gro orchid bark (it is good for something!!!), and perlite. I fertilize with Plant-tone. You will need a wire hoop, pole, trellis, etc. for support. Covering it with sphagnum moss will give the aerial roots somewhere to dig in. Good luck!
I took someones advice on the board and planted mine in African Violet soil. I put orchid bark at the bottom for drainage and then planted my vanilla on the top with the African Violet soil and it has done very very well so far. You could try that also.
Once the plant gets large it will disconect from its terrestrial roots all together at that point a Dailey misting is good which type ov vanilla did you get their are 3

I've had it going on 9 months now. It's just been happily growing so I never really gave thought to the medium..
Not sure... just labeled vanilla orchid... planifolia I think.
I have a planafora growing in one of my vivariums and it gave up its contact to the ground a long time ago. And it is about the size of a pencil and two feet long

Would it be more dependant on its roots in a house?
It's grown as a household plant in my area... like a pothos....
