Potting medium for vanilla orchid?

The black spongy soil might be coco peat. I thought that vanilla started off by being terrestrial. There's a really interesting website about vanilla here:

I've also heard that after the vine is about 5-6 feet, train it horizontal to make it flower (as if the plant thinks it's found a branch)
