Should I repot my odontocidium tiger crow golden girl?
Default Should I repot my odontocidium tiger crow golden girl?

I have a golden girl that is poking about five long roots out the bottom of its pot. I unpotted it to have a look and found that it was healthy but looked pretty pot bound even for an orchid. It is currently producing a new pseudobulb but is not yet in bud or bloom. My crazy computer won't let me add a pic, but hopefully you can get a good idea from the description.

Do you know how old the potting media is? If not, definitely repot.

Is there room for new growth in the pot? If not, repot.

With the new growth, now is a good time to repot. Never hurts to repot. Some types of orchids can 'pout' a bit after repotting, or resent having their roots messed with, and those type generally don't repot unless it's necessary, but I've never noticed Oncidium alliance to resent or pout at all.

Bad news. I bought it for my mother, so technically it's hers, but she won't repot it, and she certainly won't let me touch it!

If you repot Oncidium alliance be careful when and how you repot them. TYhey will pout a lot if repotted at the wriong time and if you mess with their roots. Best time is, like most orchids, when new growths are rooting. Not sprouting but rooting. Here's a couple pics to show you. I have repotted them at the wrong time and regretted doing so. Old pbulbs do not grow new roots. And if you mess with them they don't like it because they can take up enough water and food. So be careful. Sorry I thought I had more pics of new roots on new pbulbs. I'll take some more tomorrow. One thing to remember is that when the old pbulb puts out a new growth, it isn't until some time later that the new growth grows new roots. The new growth still pulls energy from the parent pbulb for quite some time. Not until the new roots are about an inch long would I repot the oncidium.
