Recently bought Encyclia Randii, hardly any roots. Potted up in 6 inch clay pot with holes on sides and underneath, appx 3-4 wk ago. Too big ? Just right? Any suggestions to get roots to grow?
Thanks.

I would move it to a smaller pot since you said it had few roots, maybe 3-4 inch pot? To get new roots to grow, i think seaweed has rooting hormones, never used it though. Good luck!

The pot is too big for most orchids that size and way too big for an encyclia. Encyclias like a fast drying medium. Your mix looks like a good one but the large pot will retain too much moisture.

My encyclias are in pots that are completely dry 24 hours after watering. But during the summer I water them about every 3 days. In the winter I water about once a week.

I second the small pot. I use the smallest net pot that the plant and the current new growth will fit into and use red lava rock as the medium.

Hmmm. OK. I see teeny tiny new growth sprout from bottom of a bulb.I will try repotting it this weekend. Do not want to lose it by using pot that is too big.

Reason I did this because somewhere I read this one needs a lot of space and grows quick so bigger pot is OK. So, may be that was not right.

Editing to add update-
I worried about my poor Encyclia so much that I went ahead with repotting into smaller clay pot. I had to drill 3-4 holes in it since it had only 1 drainage hole in the bottom. Not easy to drill holes....need a better drill bit.
I saw how much potting media was just sitting there wet in the bigger container. I think it should be better now, there were several new roots.
Thanks for the advise.
