I recently ordered some Vandas, and they are due to arrive by the end of this week (yay!) The nursery I bought the plants from had a special going at the time I ordered that if you purchased over a certain $$ amount they would include a compot of Vanda Pachara Delight at no additional charge. Well, they must have had a bumper crop of the little buggars, because I was shy about $10 of receiving the "bonus" and they are including a compot with my order anyway!

Since I have never dealt with a compot of orchids before, I would really like to get my ducks lined up for the little guys before they get here (I already have my slatted baskets ready for their larger siblings). Should I leave them in a compot type setting, or individually pot them right away? (I don't know what the size of the plants are yet) What type of pot/container and what type of potting medium?

I wasn't expecting the extras, but now that I know they're coming I want to give them the best start possible!

you should leave them in compots till they are about 3-4 inches in leafspan....then pot them individually in 2" pots with chunky bark or lava rock....if the compot seems crowded, separate it into several compots of 3-5 plants each....using a bit finer chunks and large perlite or some such loose medium....gl and have fun!
