Good roots may be yellowish, white, or green, but will be plump and firm - rotted roots are usually grayish, blackish/brownish (tho good roots may be somewhat brownish, stained from bark) - rotted roots will be soft, mushy and/or hollow feeling, and the velum (outer covering of roots) will come off easily.
Allow potting media to become nearly dry before watering.
I can't say if your plants will make it - if there are good roots, there's a very good chance for them.
If you are able to - please post pix!
Good luck!
