I like your experiment. Wow wouldn't an orchid landscape be cool. I suppose you'd have to use a couple of minis?

Definitely minis - there is so much potential there. I initially wanted to do a setting with lithophytic minis on a rock planting positioned on a shallow water tray, like some of these: Orchids as Bonsai. I have the rocks outside waiting to be used - but no minis and no tray.

Do bonsai pots have holes for drainage?

Hi Ruth,

Yes they do - oval and rectangular bonsai pots generally have no less than two drainage holes, round pots will have one. The right media and the right drainage is as important for bonsai as it is for orchids.

Oh WOW! Too funny, because I was thinking about something similar to this just the other day and I had missed this thread. My thought was based on those tropicals you see growing on a pourous rock such as lava and you leave water in the tray it's sitting it. The lava rock wicks up the moisture to the plants as it needs it. I was wondering if this would be possible with neo's or other similar small orchids and was thinking I might go buy one with a cool tropical on it already and then attach a few mini orchids to see how it goes.

Cool! Yes, neos would be great for this kind of thing - they are very popular in japanese settings (I can't remember the type of bonsai style it is). Sadly, I like the idea of neos more than their look - apparently japanese samurais used to take their neos into battle with them!

Very interesting. As long as they have good drainage it should work. I have a Wils. Hilda Plum Tree 'Purple Wings' that has big pseudo bulbs, it would look good in a Bonasai planter. I think I will try it.
