I have some phals bought in Home Depot. When I bought them they were blooming and packed in moss. I watered them and they were doing fine for a while. But because they were packed tightly I have decided to repot them into a bigger pot. That might have been a mistake. I hace added bark insted of moss ans a bigger pot. After a while I have noticed the roots getting black and rotting, leaving a plant with one root. Is it possible that the size of a pot has anything to do with it? What is the best medium and watering schedule for a phal?
I have 7 phalaenopsis orchids. I'll tell you how I do things. I pot them in pure sphagnum moss in clear pots. I have even taken them from pure bark to pure sphagnum, no problem. I pour water into the pot until water comes pouring out the bottom. I don't water again until 1 day after the surface of the sphagnum is crispy dry. With extra large pots I cut slits in the sides. I don't put any drainage material in the bottom of the pot. They are all grown a foot away from T5 lights except when they are in spike and bloom I move them to the windows. Hope this helps...
