I used to melt holes but found that drilling is a lot faster. Tucker, I do the same thing for my orchids, but mainly to avoid algae growing on the sides of my clear slotted pots.

I like to use an electronic soldering iron bought from Radio Shack for like $5. Plug it in and its hot in a few minutes. Pokes holes in pots like a hot knife through butter! Here is a picture of something similar: J & L J & L JL 60 Watts Soldering Iron UL Listed
