I don't double pot.
I used to pot all my plants in plastic pots, but that presented the secondary problem of trying to find cache pots to display them in. So I switched to clay for 99% of my collection and I've been happy.
For the top heavy plants, I use river rock to weigh them down. I also use LECA which can get weighty. It also helps that I'm switching to these heavy clay pots with holes in them that I buy at RF. Some of my larger schombs are potted in those but with hardly any medium. These pots are squatter than the regular pots but they are VERY HEAVY.
Double potting, for me is not something I'd do. First, if I plant is big enough to outgrow its pot, then I'd like to see how the roots are doing before potting it up. It's the perfect time to check out the plant for diseases and such before it becomes a problem. Also, I don't like the look.
