I have used coconut husk fiber to line baskets and some pots. Then put whatever I like inside. It can be difficult to separate the roots from it so I just cut the fiber around the roots and most of it will just fall away.

I made the mastake of useing a coconut fibre basket liner under my vandas. They didn't like it at all, and the roots began to rot. Now I just have charcoal and sphag.

It all depends on what type of orchid you're growing also. For Cattleyas in wood baskets I've been using tree fern fiber chunks, not the loose stuff. I grow compact cattleyas like walkeriana that way and they seem to do well although they need to be watered often. For oncidiums and phals I use coconut husk chips like I mentioned before.
