I just planted my first orchid using the s/h method with hydroton. It is a small LC Wrigleyii 'Blue Lagoon'. It has only been one month but there was no transplant shock and it looks very happy. I will try more as plants needing transplanting become available. Here in Mexico where I live crushed red lava rock is readily available. I use that exclusively with my Dendrobiums

I have used S/H before, and will again as soon as I can get hydroton, at least for certain orchids. I bought a reed stemmed epidendrum from a grower who pointed out that he had it growing in pieces of clay because our it be humid in the winter here, and everthing else he tried rotted. I already had one type of Epidendrum and must admit that despite how easy they are supposed to be to grow, they can be a pain. So I plan to use S/H, I think it would be perfect for these, as well as the stupid Catts that I keep killing!

I have several dens, phals and a cym growing in s/h. I wait until I see new growth (like a small nub) before I make the switch and then apply some bottom heat with diluted rooting hormone.
