There are various small sized mesh pots that are used in the aquarium trade to hold aquarium plants. These are shaped like round pots, but made of pliable mesh.

We use them to hold plants that need very good drainage, but need something to hold together the roots. You can sit these pots into regular plastic pots to maintain some humidity around the roots.

The mesh pots are durable, yet thin enough & pliable enough that you can cut them with regular scissors, if you like.

We get them with our nursery supplies, but an aquarium supply store should also have them.

They sell larger ones for pond plants, but they aren't cheap.

I never thought of using pond plant pots. Good idea!

Try using a glue gun to make the holes. Easy peasy

Hessian, I believe, is made from jute. The traditional large potato sacks are made of thick hessian (they are here anyway).

I would be wary of using thin mesh bags for any long term project as I seriously doubt the plastic is UV resistant.
