Default Square vs. Octagonal baskets

I'm going to buy some wooden baskets for my vandaceous orchids. (I'm choosing wood over plastic for the extra weight.) My question is whether there is any major difference between square and octagonal baskets. Is it merely an aesthetic choice, or are there reasons to prefer one over the other? Thanks.

I'm curious as well. I have been assuming that it is merely aesthetics, but I truly don't know.

I think it is mostly aesthetics, BUT at the same diameter, I think an octogonal basket would have slightly more room! Just my

True - the octagonal basket is the square one with the corners cut off.

I like the looks of the octagonal baskets better, but they cost more to start with, and as I recommend going with the next size larger than the square - 8" oct vs 6" sq, you have to really like the looks.

Thanks Ray, your geometric diagram was helpful! Upon further reflection, I would also think the octagonal basket more closely mimics the natural rooting pattern of a vanda, which is radial. But in the end, I don't think there is any major difference beyond looks and cost. Thanks for everyone's input.

I agree completely with Ray as to the practicality of the difference but there is one other factor that is not obvious.

The hex baskets are normally made from a heavier wood and will take longer to decay.

Another consideration is that there is a line of pure cedar baskets being made now that should last longer.

Normally your Vanda baskets are falling apart just as your Vanda gets to specimen size.

For one solution to rotting baskets see this tutorial.
