Chunky Perlite is the Truth
Probably my biggest orchid discovery in the past two years is the ability of chunky perlite to open up a medium and keep it open through the lifecycle of its accompanying media. I add it to bark and sphagnum and I find it really helps prevent overwatering, especially as the other media break down over time. Quality is key and i didn't have a good source for a long time, but this stuff is great and a good price (I'm not affiliated). Just thought I'd share, strongly recommend.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm about to do some long-overdue repotting and will plan to use this.

I can never remember the sizes, but gigantic perlite is also available at my local hydroponic supply store.

I buy mine from the local hydro shop. I always expect a knock on the door by the authorities after I've visited there as there are homegrown 'medicinal herbs' in this state.
The bag is narrow but waist height, it will probably last me well into my dotage!

An important thing to remember about perlite, pumice and vermiculite: The dust can cause lung disease. I open the bag well outside on slightly breezy days, and immediately spray water over the top of the perlite. Then when I go to work with it I wet it down again.

Mine came a couple of days ago. It's exactly what I've been looking for.
