Oncidium in soil?
Default Oncidium potting?

My friend bought me an Oncidium for my graduation recently. I was hesitant about repotting it due to how happy it is and because it's currently flowering and growing a new spike and I didn't want to disturb the roots. Any advice?

I have run into the exact same thing a month ago. It too was gifted by a friend. It’s a 4 bulb division of a cooler grower, fine rooted oncidopsis. I’ve never seen a oncidium in flower and great shape planted this way. I let it finish flowering, but I found it too difficult to gauge how wet it was ( was in a way to large black 1 gallon pot). So I’ve repotted it in a finer media mix of charcoal pieces, lecca, and pumice and a way smaller plastic orchid pot with slits.it now has great drainage, and it has adjusted great, new growths are starting.

It's probably not actually soil, more like a peat mix (Promix is one brand name) But the approach taken by Canadienne is spot on... unless you're familiar with the medium and watering fits in with your schedule for the rest of your plants, switch to a "friendlier" medium after the flowers are done. For now, just enjoy. While it shouldn't be allowed to dry out, go easy on the watering, aim for damp not soggy.
