Overgrown Noid...thoughts on what to do?

Well, I got this noid, and the pics didn't prepare me for quite what I got. The media it is in is very degraded, some sort of coconut fiber maybe with some very rotted bark. It was still blooming on three spikes, one was damaged and I cut it.

I would like to repot it into some better medium, and I think as it is growing so far out of the pot, that dividing it might be the way to go. The pseudobulbs have a bronze tint to them, but they are firm.

As I am not sure what it is, I am concerned that this might not be the best time? Or is getting it out of that old medium more important than timing? I am thinking of cutting the blossoms first. I did give it a watering with Kelpak.....advice please!

It might have Miltoniopsis, Oncidium and Brassia in its background. Brassias often have climbing pseudobulbs. Miltoniopsis and some Oncidiums often have pseudobulbs with a very circular outline. The flower shape suggests Oncidium influence.

I would repot the next time it makes new roots. In my opinion you don't need to hurry to repot Oncidium intergenerics in poor medium. They use so much water the medium dries quickly. They grow multiple times per year, so you don't need to wait long. Disturbing their roots at the wrong time is far worse than staying in old medium for a few months. When you do repot, don't be meticulous about removing old medium. I strongly recommend not removing old sphagnum moss no matter how bad it looks because it can't be done without serious root damage. Focus on not harming roots. I just allow whatever medium is loose to fall off. I put the plant in the new pot and fill in more medium.

OK, hard to see in a pic. The plant has growths out both sides, one has one pb about an inch above the media. The other side branches, with one pb about an inch and a half above the pot; the other branch is a stack of pb's almost 4 inches above the media. I added the photos to the original post.

Thanks E.S., I was wondering about brassidium? I read somewhere that odontoglossom can have a bronze tinge to the pb? I do think there is Brassia in there, the blossoms have a spidery quality.

I agree with the common wisdom on the Board that it is almost impossible to identify a hybrid, but your plant looks a lot like a version of Colmanara Massai Red.

Thanks Lexa, I will check it out. Whatever it is I do like it, the problem is how to best care for it. My learning curve is going to expand with this one....

I would consider putting it in a basket.

Whether basket or pot, I would just drop the whole thing into the new contained without unpotting it, and backfill. It will take off running with no root disruption.

I like the idea of a basket....it is my first official basket case! I think I will wait for new growth, and stare at it a while. That old plastic pot makes me itch to get it out, and at least get the whole thing into something better.

For what it is worth, I am retired, now but am an archaeologist....so I can finely pick with the best of them.
It so far is a skill which I enjoy with some of the orchids I have gotten. (Also excel at 20,000 pc puzzles with missing pieces.)
