Is my Aerangis mystacidii doomed after repotting?
Default Is my Aerangis mystacidii doomed after repotting?

I have a very small Aerangis mystacidii, and a little less than two weeks ago I decided to change it from being mounted on bark to potted. Since that change it's lost one leaf (and looks like another one is about to go) and I think a few roots have dried out. Is the plant just going through some shock from the change or have I doomed it? Anything I can do?

It's near a west-ish facing window (no ideal spot for it in the apartment).

Others may disagree but I think small Aerangis don't do well in most low-humidity homes without a humidifier. They much prefer mounting so they can get wet every day, then dry out rapidly. They don't like stagnant air so putting it into a large jar may not be a good idea. In a pot it's hard to strike a balance between enough water and the rapid drying. Yours looks like it's not getting enough water.

A vandaceous plant with fragrant white flowers that is much easier to grow in a home is Neofinetia falcata.

Sounds like I made a mistake with potting it. I'll try watering it more frequently to see if that helps, but won't be surprised if it doesn't make it.

It will need to grow an entirely new root system now that you’ve potted it up.

What you must do now is make it as comfortable as possible while encouraging root growth, and that means finding a way to maximize the humidity around it to prevent desiccation as the current roots may not have the uptake capacity to compensate for transpirational losses.

I will also recommend treating it with Kelpak.

Ray, how often would you recommend I use Kelpak? Right now I'm watering the plan a few times per week.
