Can I cut dead root stump?

Hi

I want to repot my orchid so roots are under the bark and have always been afraid to cut the dead stem where the roots were cut away. Can I cut the dead stem right at the base after the live healthy roots?

Yes, absolutely no harm will come to your plant by removing the brown dead roots - indeed it might well prevent wet rot progressing up the presently healthy tissue.

I'm not sure which root you mean to cut. I see below a section of old dead stem with dead roots. Above it is live stem with live roots. I would cut off the old dead stem below the live roots and repot. All the roots I see are alive.

Oh okay. Sorry didn't know term. That makes senses that it's the stem. I guess I meant dead stem.
