media in pole identification for vanilla?

Hi! After putting off a project for over a year, I'm finally going to build my vanilla pot/pole thingy.

A couple years ago, I linked to a video in this thread:

Any idea what media is inside the poles? No habla fronch, and youtube doesn't have autotranslate turned on there. It looks like some kind of very thin straw/plant clippings?

If that's not something readily available here in the states, what what would ya'll suggest? I'm going to build a pole that's probably 6-8ft tall, tbd. Originally I was going to make a squat "table" and drape the orchid around that, and I may still do that later since the vine just broke so now have second plant about to grow.
