I think it is to facilitate the movement while minimizing the evaporation

The more surface area for the vapor to land the more it will. I believe

Hmmmm… So how are y’all sort of “suspending” that sphag but it isn’t down on the LECA and turning into soup?

RJSquirrel showed the night water level is well below the sphagnum. He wanted to keep the sphagnum from being soggy wet. He wanted it to stay moist and airy. This would be defeated by having the water level high enough to reach the net pot.
