How soon is repotting needed here

This handsome cym is new to me and flowers haven't even opened yet. I saw this new growth already pushing against the side. Can I wait until next year to repot? Thanks.

I think the problem is that that bulb will swell to the size of the bulb next to it.

The pot is already starting to bulge slightly. It's not ideal.

You could cut a little half circle out of the pot underneath the bulb to give it more room.

If it was me I'd start by doing that for now.

You can repot Cymbidium any time of the year (though early spring is preferred), even if the plant is in bud.

Obviously, if the plant is in bud, be careful not to break the spike.

Since Cymbidium run the roots on the outside of the root ball, it is not necessary to remove the old mix. Simply up-pot and add fresh mix on the outside perimeter.

If there is a backbulb side with no new growth, you can push that side up against the wall of the new container, and just give it 2-3" of space on the growth side.

This lively thing has new growth on both sides so it looks like it has to to go into center of the new home. Just purchased barks and 8" nursery pot. I am anxious to see its fowers!!

Cyms like to be potbound - they bloom best just as they are breaking the pot. I would wait until spring - after the bloom, to repot. It won't be harmed by having the new growths be a bit crowded for a few months. Cyms are NOT fragile. For now, just let it bloom.

A hint when you are trying to get a potbound Cym out of the pot... squeeze the pot (or step on it to compress it a bit) or give the pot a few good whomps on the side with a wooden mallet. That will tend to release roots that are stuck to the pot. Then if you still can't get it out, cut the pot. Pots are cheap, roots are precious.
