Netted Pots
Hi,
I'm new here and wanted to show how I use netted pots. I have phal orchids. They are usually top heavy when in bloom. I place a couple of rocks for weight in the bottom of the pot. I mix orchid wood chip mixture with spaghum moss for my potting mixture. Sometimes I need to balance the plant in the pot with wire since they tend to want to lay over.
When I first did this the net pots fit into an outer solid pot with no problem since the roots were internal to the net pot. In the summer I put my orchids outdoors where they get our sprinkler system watering them daily so I only have them in the net pots (no outer pot that would hold water).
Bringing them in this winter the roots have grown outside the net pots so they no longer fit into the outer pots. So now they sit on trays and because of the rocks I put in the bottom, they are stable. I was soaking weekly for 30 minutes using some window planters I have that i plugged up the bottom holes of.
Now it seems they are drying out too fast, roots looking too dry between waterings so I am going to start watering them where they are on the trays. I forgot to mention that I have wicks in all the pots that come up a side of the pot and circle the top. That's how I initially watered them when they were in outer pots.
I specifically wanted to mention the net pots which I really like. I purchased some originally from repotme which are really strong. When it comes to repotting you have to be able to cut thru the plastic to remove the pot from around the roots. That's why I would recommend finding cheaper and not as strong net pots because they are easier to cut thru. I think I found some on Amazon. (Just a suggestion)
I've only repotted one or two, one was in a repotme pot and the other was not. The only reason I repotted them was to straighten them up after a summer outdoors and laying waaay over.
