Alternative Potting for Macodes Petola Female
Default Alternative Potting for Macodes Petola

Hello!

I have a question regarding alternative potting methods for terrestrial orchids. I received a Macodes petola seedling recently and have been thinking about the best way to grow it successfully in my home and climate.

A majority of my non-orchid houseplants which are traditionally grown in soil, I have converted to wick watering with fine orchid bark. These include African violets, peperomias, ficus, etc.

As I have no experience with terrestrial orchids, I was wondering if those more experienced than me have tried a wick watering setup for a jewel orchid with bark, and if that has provided the roots with enough moisture? Or if no one has tried this, if you think I would run into any problems trying to do so?

Thank you!

No reason it won’t work but let it be a very open mix. I grow this plant in SH and it is very happy. I would be careful with bark that it doesn’t get soggy and stagnant.

I grow in mostly inorganic.
