Trades, “pay it forward”s, and division exchange?? - Orchid Board

Hi. I don’t know if there are rules about this but I was wondering if anyone ever wanted to do any kind of “no money” orchid trading or anything similar?

I used to participate in a game called pay it forward where you have to send a free gift to someone ( here it would be based on desire as no one wants random stuff) and then they have to pass it in with a division that they have or an extra seedling etc.

Then there are just trade offers, for example I have a big phrag I am going to divide and I would offer a two fan clump and see who wanted it and what they might have

Anyone want to do something like this?

As a matter of fact, I will be moving that Brass. cordata after it blooms, as I need to put in SH. If ya truly "need" it, I could likely find a division. Let me think about yer pay it forward... But I like the overall theory.

Everyone please know... if ya trade or share with someone, WaterWitchin says don't cry or whine to a moderator if you don't like what ya get.

Cool beans. I was thinking it might work like this:

Trading and giving away are different so I am going to go with trading and I think give-aways are better coordinated among a group

I will make a post of some divisions and small plants I would be willing to trade and if anyone wants any They can either post their offerings or PM a person and try to negotiate an accord?

As I type that I kind of prefer the give away idea. I’ll ruminate on the bits and pieces but I think if rather just give away some plants and get a give away vibe created lol. Then karma will bring me the plants I need lololol

Trading is lovely and I've often done it. However, sometimes you can just give and not receive for shipping costs. There are lots of venues for extra plants.

DC, Now I'm thinking harder about this, and do have some concern about the way this is headed. if you're giving away a plant, negotiate via PM or email whether you want the recipient to pay shipping or not.

I would hate to see a thread where folks started "bidding" on what they have to trade in a thread. Consider the scenario where you have something to trade. I want it. But so does Dolly. And so does Ray. (Sorry Dolly and Ray for using ya as examples, but figure you'll each take one for the team.)

So I offer to trade something, Ray offers a better trade, and Dolly ups that trade. Then along comes Bill Nye, and he offers a trade of something he KNOWS you must have. So now you have four forum members all vying for something. Someone's gonna end up getting their feelings hurt, because it's all being conducted on an open thread where everyone views what others are offering. What we end up with then is a mess.

Aside from that aspect, there's the consideration that some are more trusting than others. So you start sharing your shipping address, name, etc, to someone who wants to make a trade with you. With some folks that's okay, with other folks you submit yourself to possible shady behavior. Unfortunately, that's the way life is in our new cyber world regardless. And then someone gets burned, or believes they've been burned, and start bitching at OB moderators to do something about it.

I know the Classified section is already here. I have no idea of costs, and I've never tried to place an ad. So perhaps the best idea is to use Classified section, do a "want to trade" type ad, and leave it out of the general forum threads. I'll research more and get back with ya. I'm a moderator, new to it, even though I've been around for awhile.

Please do an "all stop" until I have time to research this a bit, and chat with fellow moderators.
