I think under off topic. It's been awhile and I'm old. I think I used the title "Free to Good Home. "

Thanks Dolly, nevermind. You posted in the particular genus category. That's what I was wondering. Gracias!

Okay DCoconuts, I'm just gonna wing it. Camille will tell me later if I'm wrong. I would post, as Dolly did, in the specific genre of the plant, or post on Classifieds. Appears Trades or Freebies are free.

And if you want to do a "trade" situation, post in the specific genre thread something to the effect of "I really neeeeed a Brass. cordata." Someone want to trade me? "

That makes sense to me. A long ongoing thread.... Ummmm, not so much sense, at least to me.

In the FWIW catagory. Extra phals make great gifts for nursing homes etc. (OW taught me that, as he rescues, reblooms and donates.) I donate my extra plants to the Chicago EPA office. (I hear they need joy.) I have a flat of white Xmas cactus cuttings started for them at the moment. With a little thought, we could cheer a lot of people.

Posting on the Orchid Mall 'unclassifieds'?

It is a good idea, but it then it becomes an issue on how to reach a 'fair' trade. For example:
  • I have mother divisions of several valuable Cattleyas. How do we value a mother division of Guarianthe skinneri 'Waldor' AM/AOS vs a mother division of Rlc. Malworth 'Orchidglade' FCC/AOS?
  • I have selected a number of good/unusual/spectacular Cattleyas from seedlings coming from top level breeders. How should I value a division of one of those plants, vs the same Rlc Malworth 'Orchidglade FCC/AOS mother division?

Again, there is no compensation or consideration. No even value exchange. I want to give away some stuff. Maybe someone else does too. Maybe one day someone will give me something.

I am now confident about how to do this. Cheers. Back in a few. I have bedtime stories to read

In the past, this sort of stuff has happened in one of 2 places: a post in the classifieds section, or a thread in a forum. The classifieds is barely used so a forum post may have more exposure. Most of the time the post has been alongs the line of " I have X, Y, Z to give away or trade, reciever pays shipping if no trade involved, first come first serve". That usually has worked rather well as long as the list of available plants is updated as they get reserved.

Too many years ago there was an orchid forum that is no longer alive, but I was a very active member there. I often offered orchids for free, with free shipping, but I asked for a nominal donation to a charity of the recipient's choice, or my favorites of a local animal shelter or Wounded Warriors.

Just sayin'. DirtyCoconuts wants to give stuff away. I have stuff to give away too. All I want in return is a donation to a cause, but honestly, I did ask for a pic of the donation receipt if you weren't a 'regular' on the forum. But for your $10-15 you got the plant that I posted, shipping included.

I'd love to participate in this effort.

When there is an orchid that I do not want, it goes either to friends or family who have expressed an interest or to the Orchid Society. Gone.

I have mailed out pinguicula (free, I paid shipping) but they are so delicate that it is quite an endeavor to make certain that they are protected for shipping. Not going to do that as some of the people would fertilize them or water with tap and then complain that they died. Ugh.
