Phalaenopsis repot to save it
So I just rescued a Phalaenopsis from an old lady that I know today. She said her Phal wasn't giving any flowers for such a long time. She had it all the way in the corner of the hall-way in the darkness, no day-light what so ever. Besides that she had repotted it (with orchid medium she bought at the supermarket, way too much chaff) into a ceramic pot with no drainage wholes!!! To make matters worse she had sunk down the orchid in the medium so that it was completely covering the growth point of the leaves, I just saw two pieces of leaves sticking out on each side.
I was like OH NO... not that I'm an expert, but this is a sure way to kill an Phalaenopsis. I told her I'd take it and try to nurse it back to life.
The thing is, this orchid has 2 keiki's. One keiki has the total of 3 roots, so I've repotted this one in his own pot (with wholes on all sides).
The mother plant is in a REALLY poor condition, all roots are dead except 2 small short stumps. Besides that I suspect it's got crown rot.
The thing is the 2nd keiki does not have any roots at all. My question is: should I remove this 2nd keiki as well, and take the loss. At least we got one keike out of it?
The thing is, will the mother plant survive at all... and if she stands any chance of survival maybe all it's energy will go to that one keiki, it's got left... What to do?
At the moment I've got the mother plant sitting on some wet sphagnum moss, trying to rehydrate it, as it was really dry... in spite of being buried in the medium.
