Masdevallia Sunset Jaguar 'Sunset Spots' AM/AOS

Very nice masdie. I also have had the stuck-in -sheath thing going on. Maybe it's a humidity issue I need to address.So now I find myself hovering and checking new growth and use a toothpick to gently pry open a sheath to unravel a much desired growth,not some pretzel-looking mess!

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I love it, even if it is misshapen. Hopefully next week, I will get another cultivar, 'Nightbreed' from Mountain Orchids. I emailed Darin (the owner) and he said he might even have a 'Psychedelic Sunset' ! I love the spots and colors on this cross!

I've been having the same problem and now have a lot of deformed leaves. The tooth pick wasn't cutting it on a lot of them so I had to do surgery with a razor blade. My humidity in the masdevallia area rarely drops below 40% and is usually around 60% so I'm not sure that's it. I had been using the same fertilizer regime as the other orchids but have cut back and see if this resolves the pleating. They otherwise seem healthy and are always putting out new growths, so it just seems odd. Some don't do it at all, like my veitchiana and Chaparana... who knows?

I think humidity might be the source of your deformities. 40-60% is actually pretty low for Masdevallias. Shoot for closer to 80-85%


What temperature range are you growing these in?

It could be and I certainly know they this is less than ideal, however, I am experimenting since some are not coming out deformed and some are, even though a few are closely related/share parentage.

I also have a Dracuvallia Fleur doing the same thing in a greenhouse type set up that is always above 70% and usually above 80%. Outside the grow tent, 65% humidity is the max I am willing to go. I don't want to encourage mold growth in my apartment.

As for temps, 60-62F nights and 70-75F days. I grow either s/h in clay pots or kool-logs to make up for the fact that I know they would like it a bit cooler than I can give.

70-80 is low for a Dracula. They are even more sensitive.
