Restrepia brachypus

Hi all,

This is my only Restrepia. I tossed it inside my terrarium on the background and it has grown and freely flowered over the last two years. New leaves will pop out somewhere new and blooms follow. Pretty awesome I should say.

I have a few Restrepias, mostly because I love their alien look. This guy is on my someday list and yours is lovely!

Andy from Andy's Orchids also told me that if you break a leaf off of Restrepias, you can stick the broken stalk in sphag and it will often grow roots. Pretty cool, if you ask me. I haven't tried it yet but I like the idea of an orchid you can actually propagate from cuttings with little effort!

Will it grow a new plant, too, or just roots? There are quite a few plants whose leaves will root, but not develop further. I'm thinking of cycads and Hoya.

Lovely, I like them very much and when I spot a new bud, there is lots of anticipation! They deserve more attention.

They root and form new plantlets. As they sometimes form keikis as well (right where the flowers emerge) there is no need of cutting leaves.

Yep, mine has formed new keikis with well developed roots all over the place. Most of the plant is hard to reach for me so I don't know what is going on back there. But the keikis I have been able to harvest are growing.

My Restrepia brachypus came to me as a start that was rooted using this method. A single leaf has now spread to 2 dozen + growths.

I also find that leaves will often develop roots at the base of the leaf. I just pin or tie these to the medium and they grow, forming another plant in the clump.
