Masdie Haul
Ok,
So I went a bit nuts in trying to recapture my Masdevallia growing hay day. I went ahead and purchased Masdies from all over, two weeks ago I got two from Ebay (Still alive). I have another from a different Ebay vendor coming soon, and today I received two packages, one from Kalapana Tropicals and the other from Golden Gate Orchids. The quality of the plants is superb from both vendors. Their packaging is professional. Here are some pics. I just found out I may have broken my camera so I have to send it to get repaired. Because of this, the photos are cell phone photos and of a lesser quality.
This is Machu Picchu from Golden Gate Orchids.

This is Masdevallia Huayana Picchu from Kalapana Tropicals. It looks like the bloom opened while it was in transit. I hope it opens up more.

Haneczka from Kalapana Tropicals. I did not order this, I guess they just threw it in as a bonus. This flower seems to be on it's way out but another bud is coming in.

I've got a bunch more coming from Ecuagenera this month and a bunch from Colombian Orchid Imports later on. Wish me luck. I'm going to repot these, mostly in clay pots semi/hydro style, some may end up mounted on kool-logs.

I always wanted to get some madevallias or draculas but, as far as I know, they need cool temps and high HR.
Some people say they can take higher temps and lower HR's but... how much is high? And how much is low?
How is the humidity/temp of your growing place?

Nice haul! I only grow a nidifica a erinacea and a recent purchase a impostor x floribunda (Magic Wand). The new one has been blooming for a few weeks and it is a neat cross. I may have to try others.
Good luck with your new plants, they look great.

I don't even try them because I know I can't give them the lower temps they like in the summer. Nice bunch you have gotten. Good luck with them.

Thanks guys. I put them by my south facing window. I've grown these Masdies and similar hybrids before in the same room by the same south facing window with success. The secret is that at this time of the year, there is no direct sunlight. Direct sunlight progresses from just a few minutes a day to about 4 hours in December as the sun gets lower in the sky. Right now it is too high in the sky to enter the window.
The room is kept cool with an AC unit. The RH is low right now, but I intend to place them all in a deep tray or plastic container (possibly hang them off the sides on the inside of the container). What I might do is fill the container with water and put an ultrasonic fogger and a computer fan. The fan will blow the fog around into the plants keeping them humidified. THis is how I kept them before. THe downfall of this system is that it requires constant maintenance.
The last time I had these I lost the whole collection because I went away for a month. All my friends went with me, so no one was able to water my plants for me. I did my best to prepare them for the coming draught, and even though they survived the month, none survived the resulting scale and mite infestation. Scale and mite love dry plants.

Sounds like a great way to keep them happy....if you don't leave them again. I've never had scale or mites, knock wood. I hope you have better luck with the new ones. They are all very nice, hope to see the other shipments when they arrive.

Good luck with all of them. I am sure you will be posting many beautiful blooms in the future! The flowers are really neat and I have been tempted many times to get a few. Right now, I just have a Masdevallia nicaraguae. Maybe if it does well, I will try another.

Good luck with them. I have just put up a new set up in my basement for what I have left. One of those green shelf's with the plastic cover to keep up humidity and I put a humidifier in there so if I want I could have it 100%. But I am trying to keep it in the 70's or 80's.

Yay for masdies! Great haul and great plants Tindomul. I went to today's local orchid club meeting and I got a nice little Masdevallia Cheryl Shohan 'Red Hot Momma' AM/AOS for $5 donation. Most of my masdies are species but how could I resist?
