I grow a lot of species masdies but not this one I grow. It's good that it is heat tolerate. That is the biggest problem for me. I don't have a cool area so I have to try and create it for each plant.
How do you create this cool area? This sounds very interesting
I use 2 different ways. Some plants are mounted on Kool-logs that I fill with rain water daily. The others are in clay pots with clay s/h type beads, then I set the entire thing in a plastic dish with rain water at various levels. The more water the plants like the higher the water. I just have to find what works in my grow space. I would like to get a cool grow space some day. There are a couple that I can't grow without it.
Here are the 2 methods:
Besides being a pretty flower, this species is also a sequential bloomer so that you'll have several blooms that will extend your pleasure. I'm in Zone 5 so the summer heat is a problem. When it's really hot, it comes into the air conditioning. The vendor I bought it from told me to put it outside. Maybe you could try that when possible and then bring it in when it gets too hot.
Wintergirl that is awesome! I actually have a Dracula bella growing on a kool-log currently.
Wuness, how long do these flowers last sequentially blooming? And my final question is should I repot it while it is in bloom? I'm worried about the state of the media as I have no clue what it looks like. I'll take your advice and try it outside.
I don't know exactly how long the blooms will last, but I think you should get 3-4 weeks anyway. Personally, I wouldn't re-pot now. A lot of masdies kind of go a little dormant in the hot weather and I think the best time would be the fall when the temps are lower, growth resumes and new roots will be forming.
This Masdevallia requires warm / High temps unlike others that prefer cool conditions. If you can access Orchid Wiz there are some good cultural notes relating to this plant within this program.

Does this mean that if I grow it cooler along with other masdevallias it will do poor? Does it really need warmer temps?
