Repotting Masdevallias for summer survival
I recently purchased some Masdevallias and per usual for me I repotted them into semi-hydroponics with the regular pellets and plastic pots.
To keep them cool but consistently moist without helicoptering, I'm wondering if I should repot them into clay pots and grow them together in a tray, much like how carnivorous plant enthusiasts sometimes grow their plants.
Any thoughts? If I decide to try this before summer, when should I repot them?

I have most of mine mounted on Kool-logs but I do have a couple in clay pots. I put s/h beads in the bottom and s. moss on top. The Kool-logs will be fine for summer but not sure about the clay pots yet. I would not keep them in plastic when it gets hot. I almost lost my first masdie last summer, that is when I switched to Kool-logs.

Okay. Do you think it's bad if I repot them right away then? I'm new to pleurothallids and have no how they handle the stresses of repotting.
I'm a little hesitant to grow anything mounted because I grow under lights and figuring where and how to hangs things is a challenge. Also, wouldn't mounted orchids have to watered most days?

I think masdies are very tolerant of repotting and it should be fine to do it now. I would get them in clay pots for sure. I would put s. moss on top. Mounting on the Kool- log is different than other mounts. You just fill the chamber with water, it's very easy. The plants stay very wet though, so you have to be selective unless you leave it dry.

Where are you located, and which Masdevallia do you have? Mine all did fine outside through the summer in s/h, seeing mid/upper 90s several times. They are mostly hybrids, along with one warm grower, M. tonduzii.

I live in a first floor apartment in South Carolina, I don't think I could put them outside anywhere they would get light. I've read that what really hurts cool growers is high nighttime temps and during the summer my area has lows in the 70s which is probably as cold as my apartment will get.
I have M. sernae, M. polystricta, M. oscitans, and M. angulata. I think they're all supposed to be warmer growing. It's entirely possible I'm overthinking this.

Warm growers should be ok. Most of mine are cold growing species.
