Default Porroglossum mucosum 'Red Wing Tips'

Last year I purchased a pleurothallis type plant from Ecuagenera called Porroglossum mucosum after reading about it in Orchid Digest. Since there were many varieties I wasn't sure which one I had but the vendor Ivan said it was golden yellow. So I got it. I knew several things about this species. I knew it had a hairy inflorescence and masdevilla type flowers. What I didn't know was that it was sequentially blooming and that this variety had red tips on a golden yellow flower!!! It also had deep purple underside of the 4 cm leaves ... When it flowered I was in bliss! The flowers are large, a spread of 4 cm and blooms spring through summer. I highly recommend this plant for beautiful flowers and ease of culture.

I grow it in my intermediate terranium with coolish nights (12C) and days no more than 25C. Humidity almost 80-90% and sprayed with RO water daily. It's watered once a week and fed a weak mixture of fish emulsion and sea kelp, as all plants in the terranium.

WOW!!!!! Thats amazing!!!!!! I think I want one. I love it when people expose us to new plants. I mean... I have heard of this genus before but never really took a good look at it until now. Thanks!

Most welcome to expose cute miniatures on here. It's one of the best educational forums I know on orchids! Hope you can secure one soon from Ecuagenera. They might be at the NYC show coming up!!

Which show, the NY Botanical Gardens? I don't remember ever seeing vendors at their shows.

Out of curiosity...

Were you aware that orchids in the genus Porroglossum have a lip that acts like a trap for insect pollinators?

If you touch the lip, it will snap upwards. It responds to light pressure.

This interesting feature of Porroglossums wasn't mentioned yet. Wasn't sure if you knew about it or not. This is what makes them fun.

Well I certainly had that fact slip right past me for the last 11 years. Or I just totally forgot about it. In either case thanks Philip for bringing that up!

Thanks Phillip for highlighting that fact... I actually discovered that last summer when I was positioning the flower for photos and I was like whattttt?? Then I read about it and was even more entranced by it. In fact I have a few other porroglossums now!
