I water 3 of them about every day. If I don't they seem to dry to much. I am also wondering about setting them in saucers of water. It is so dry here but I do have them setting on top of saucers with water around them and a humidifier running 24/7 over the top of them.

I have gotten 2 of them to bloom but my hirtzii is now blasting most of it's blooms.
Do you have air movement around them as well? Low humidity will cause problems with Species in particular. The ones that bloomed, what are they?

Sorry to take so long. My hirtzii which I think I got last April has bloomed off and on since about the end of April. Little trooper that it is, but they are mostly blasting now. It has one bloom and I think there is another one going to open. A few more little ones starting but may blast. I did read about the air movement and am trying to run fans to see if that is what it is.

The wind will sometimes also blow a bit though the window they are in. The other one I have bloomed and is getting another bud opening now is my Ken Dole. I think it blasted some blooms because it was to cold in my kitchen window for it. Now when it storms I take it out of the window.

Those are the 2 I have gotten to bloom. My ignea is looking better but has not bloomed nor has my lilacina also has never bloomed. It always has black tips on the leaves and did come that way. It has lost every leaf it came with but also grew allot of new ones.

All 4 of these are in spagh. All are in clay pots except my hirtzii which is in a plastic pot. The liliacina is the only one I did wrap new spagh around the top part of the pot.

When summer comes the sun will shine in the window in the early morning and I think was to hot for the roots and all the tips of the leaves got yellow and black. They started getting better when the cool weather came so I am going to have to try and figure something out for then.

My other 3 came from a different place and are in spagh with tree fern. It seems like they stay damp longer tha the spagh. Could this be? Well my Dracuvallia is the one of them I water almost every day but the other 2 I only water 1 about every other the other one I only water about every 4 days. They are also on the side with more humidity so that could be it.

Sorry long winded.

Sometimes leaf tip turning black is due to over fertilizing. Brown tips sometimes means not enough or too much water. I don't think you are under watering.

You can help deflect direct sunlight by using sheers in the windows. If you are at higher elevations even morning sun may be too much for these plants without some kind of sun filter or shade.
Clay pots will keep the root zone cooler, but you should be careful to not allow the temps to exceed 80-85 for extended periods. The clay works when the pot is visibly damp on the outside. If it looks dry, then the plant isn't going to benefit from the cooling evaporative effect of clay. Your area is high desert and DRY! Do what you can to increase the amount of humidity in the air.
I have used a "mini greenhouse" sold by the big box stores with great success. I don't know if this is something you have space to house. You can create a micro humid environment in your dry area with one of these.
I have used a fogger to increase the humidity around my moisture loving plants. Misting also cools the air and provides humidity.
There are a lot of creative ways to help provide a more amiable environment for your orchids.

Thanks. I know it's not over fertilization as they haven't been fert much for a while because I ran out. I just got it in yesterday so will be fertilizing today. It may be possible that it is a bit over watered. I don't think they have dried out to much in a while maybe at first.

I'm still trying to find that happy medium. I have thought of a small green house and putting it in the basement. I have a garage that is under the house. Doesn't seem like we use it for the cars so I should just get to making it my new orchid housing place.

Sense I wrote this I found that my Masde Red wing has a bud on one of the old spikes it had when I got it and my Dracuvallia Maria Arcila is getting a new spike. It had one when I got it and it hug on for a while but it finally did die.

I'm stoked, perhaps I finally may have the humidity doing better. I appreciate all your input. You grow such nice ones. Oh and my Ken Dole is opening up soon, I'll post it this time around.

That little hirtzii blasted another one.

Oh and I wanted to say they are never in the 80's for long. They may have been there a day or 2 at the most. I really am not sure they have ever been in the 80's here. I turn on the swamp cooler in the summer when it hits 70. They are mostly in the 50's and 60's.

They are 60.8 right now and it's noon.

I am posting on this again as I was wondering if we could put this as a sticky? That way we all can look at it easier. And then someone did one on Dracula's. I just need to look at these sometimes. I forget you know hehehehehe.

A lovely bunch of flowers! Unfortunately for me, most of the really brilliantly colored masdies are cold to cool growers. My abysmal winter RH (20%) and my hot summer temps would do the cool growers in.

Congrats on the award, btw!
