It's hard to answer, and there can be many factors, but in my opinion, it's something that can't be avoided much. The think is - many people say DO NOT MIST over buds, over spikes, over leaves, etc, well, guess what, in nature, when growing in situ, and the rain comes, everything is soaking wet, there is not "gentle" rain that would avoid spike/buds/leaves. I know it may cause issues, but how to avoid them, yes, you can try to mist or water very carefully and not hit the buds, sometimes this is nearly impossible, especially with micro and miniature orchids. I used to try, but don't do it anymore. I know I may be loosing some, but I treat them as they would grow wild, when it rains, even with
misting bottle, it RAINS, all over the plant :-)
