Masdevallia Dawn Glow, odd spike growth
Default Masdevallia Dawn Glow, odd spike growth

I have bloomed my Masdevallia Dawn Glow (melanoxantha x constricta) for the first time (pics to come) and after the first spike put up a flower I got a few more spikes. One of them is this. I'm not sure what to make of this spike, there are 3 little tendril like growths coming out of the top of it. I only have 3 masdies so I'm not too familiar with all of their growth habits and I need some help in figuring out what it is.

After the first bloom fell, a second flower bloomed behind it on the same stalk, could this be a multiple flower spike? Thanks.

This could indeed be a sequential bloomer. The inflorescence looks like 2 blooms are coming on at the same time. This does happen from time to time, I wouldn't worry. I'm curious to see if the blooms both form normally. Please post a pic when the blooms sort themselves out.

I think that, when the flower spike was trying to go out between the leaves, it could have caused the deformation.

Ok so it's been a few weeks. The plants put out many spikes including the strange one. This is the first flowering for me so I had no idea what to expect from it. There are currently 5 blooms on it, I'll try to post pics. The first flower to fall was followed up by another bloom, so far the other flowers don't seem to have another bud set behind it like the first. The strange spike has since yellowed and I image would dry out soon. I wonder if you're right and this is a deformation.

To bad its seems to have aborted the odd blooms. Great plant though.
